At 2 years old, Nicolly Pereira never saw nor heard her mother.

This toddler from Brazil was both deaf and blind. She was diagnosed with pediatric glaucoma after birth. The glaucomas in her eyes were so bad, she couldn’t even see light.

Her mother was desperate to help her little girl.

Nicolly received seven different surgeries in her home of Santa Catarina, Brazil, but they were unsuccessful.

But then her mother, Daiana Pereira, posted Nicolly’s story on Facebook.

It went viral…and eventually, a Facebook user from Miami contacted the Jackson Health Foundation’s International Kids Fund (Wonderfund) on behalf of Nicolly. The Fund partnered with the Kevin Garcia Foundation and together the organizations raised $17,000 to pay for Nicolly’s surgery at Bascom Palmer.

For months, Daiana believed her child was developmentally disabled.

Not only was the toddler deaf and blind, but she could not talk or walk. Amazingly, when Nicolly and her mother arrived in the U.S., doctors at the University of Miami discovered she had water buildup in her inner ears.

The doctors drained the little girl’s ears and she could hear!

Once she was out of surgery and recovery, this baby experienced something amazing.

She was able to see light — and mom — for the very first time.

Before this moment, Nicolly lived in a dark world without her mother’s face.

(Feel free to cry.)

It’s incredible what this little girl had to fight through.
